Published on 12 September 2024, Lord Darzi’s report provides an independent assessment of the current performance and challenges facing the NHS and wider healthcare system.

Commenting on the publication, Jon Freegard, Principal Consultant at Skills for Health, said:

“The Darzi report detail is not new, or unexpected. Increasingly, evidence is confirming the extent of what is known, and what is felt by those working within the NHS. Finances, staff experience and the lack of management capacity are among the key issues foregrounded by the report, and Skills for Health has seen these first-hand.

“The stringent fiscal controls already in place across the system require a different thought process and approach to workforce planning, we argue.

“A collective effort – where many different disciplines and departments are reviewing their services at the same time – is bearing early signs of more effective and integrated workforce planning as dependencies are identified earlier.

“Emphasis on a collaborative approach will better inform constrained capital spend in the future, which will be a significant part of the NHS evolution and review of physical estate.

“We are here to support the NHS to continue in their workforce planning effort, particularly as we enter a difficult winter period.”
