Supporting children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)
Communication forms the core of every aspect of life and plays a leading role in children’s development, both within the home and at school. A national review and action plan in 2008 (Bercow Report and Better Communication, 2008) identified a broad range of issues for parents and provided clear recommendations for improving the quality of support available for children with SLCN.
What this means for the workforce
Skills for Health have worked with NHS North West to review progress in implementing specific recommendations to improve services for children with SLCN. The review explored joint commissioning, planning and delivery of multi-agency service provision and highlighted examples of good practice in jointly improving provision across health and local authorities.
The full report includes a self evaluation tool for partnerships to use to highlight excellent practice and shine a light on ‘hot-spots’ that need to be improved. This process can be applied to any aspect of children’s services and is a useful tool for commissioners and providers of multi-agency children’s services.
